Just as we prefer the new PARCC-Math tests to the old MCAS-Math tests, we prefer the new PARCC-ELA tests to their MCAS predecessors.
Here is why:
- PARCC-ELA mitigates the role of luck.
- PARCC-ELA, more than MCAS-ELA, requires students to distinguish nuances of word meaning.
- PARCC-ELA, more than MCAS-ELA, demands that students analyze authors’ uses of literary devices.
- PARCC-ELA, more than MCAS-ELA, tests true reading comprehension.
- PARCC-ELA, far more than MCAS-ELA, tests writing extensively and requires students to write in response to complex texts.
